Handmade V-berth Sheets
Monday, March 29, 2010 at 19:51 I'm so excited to post pictures of our new V-berth sheets. We've used the first set I made since November 2007, so it was definitely time for a new set. I was very meticulous this time to make a pattern for the mattresses in the V-berth.

One of the reasons I was so careful is because Eric splurged and bought me some fancy designer fabric for the sheets, so I really wanted to eek out every inch of available fabric to cut back on cost. I also truly wanted a pattern for the next time I need to make us sheets. This pattern will save me so much time in the future!
This time around I worked on the large portions of the mattresses in the marina community room:

As I mentioned in the post from 2007, this type of sewing requires you to sew closely along the seams to make a tight fit (instead of just relying on elastic around the corners.) Here's an example of what I mean:

Here's the finished, starboard-side mattress on the community room table:

Here are the finished sheets in the V-berth!

This time around I also had coordinating material to make matching pillowcases. After reading a ton of online pillowcase tutorials I finally found Robin Gallagher's Youtube tutorial and it actually made sense. You can view her blog here.
As with the sheets, I tried to use up every available inch of my material, so in some cases I sewed pieces together like you see here to finish up my accent pieces for the pillowcases:

Here's the tube you create as you work through Robin's pillowcase tutorial:

And when you turn the tube right-side out you get this lovely look:

Here's one of the finished smaller pillows. Our pillows are from the Healthy Back Store, so they're shaped a bit different than classic pillows:

And the finished product: one body pillow, two pillowcases, and my fabulous sheets. Huzzah!

Just wanted to post the final pillow pic. So happy with how this project turned out. Thanks for all the kind comments!

Really looks beautiful honey! Our boat is getting so much prettier.
So awesome! You may not be the only one with Amy Butler fabric on your boat. You know, one of these days when we finally buy a boat. Did you really make sheets for each of the three parts of the V-berth? Why did you choose that over a big triangle?
Hi Victoria, the mattresses are actually separated by wooden dividers, (they're just hidden between the sides of the mattresses), so I had to do individual pieces in order to get a tight fit. Can't wait to see your handiwork on your future boat as well!
Charlottle, those are so beautiful! I can't beileve how professional they look! I am so proud of you. I can't wait to see them ni person!!! You are amazing!!!!
Elegant! I can't wait until we get our first set of fitted V-berth sheets. Nice work!
I am dying!! I love Amy Butler fabrics (and I don't even know how to sew) It looks amazing Charlotte! You are so (sew) talented. Ok, I know you're about to give birth and all, but you need to come down here and sew some stuff for me too! :)
I just had a wonderful memory, looking at these pictures. I remember when you sewed a bunch of stuffed fish for our stage show. I wish I still had one of those fish. Your sheets look great. They really do.
Great job! I stumbled upon your blog looking for how to make your own pillow cases for body pillows and you've just inspired me to do something more interesting than just a white cover. I'm definitely heading over to Robin Gallagher's blog for tips.
Thanks!
Thank you Adrienne! Would love to see what you come up with!
