Our boat is a Hans Christian 36, known as a HC36 Mao Ta Cutter. It was built in 1975 using fiberglass (hull and cabin top), teak (decks, finishing), and mohagany (interior).

  • Length: (bow to stern) 43', LOA 36, LWL 32.
  • Beam: 11'4"
  • Draft: 5'10", "cheese wedge" keel. Kind of looks like a full keel, although it's a much sharper angle in the fore section.
  • Displacement: 22,000 pounds dry. 8,000 pounds of lead in the keel.
  • Engine: 51HP Yanmar 4JH2E diesel inboard.

Pros and Cons (summarized):

  • Takes a lot of wind to get her going. Anything under 10 knots can be a little troublesome, and under 5 knots any progress at all is considered fortunate.
  • When the wind does blow, and the waves are crashing, this is the boat to be on.
